Service Overview
Inspekta provides comprehensive Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) across regional NSW to ensure your electrical equipment is safe, functional and inspected in accordance with AS/NZS 3760:2022. Our competent, trained technicians conduct rigorous inspection and testing using calibrated test equipment, helping your business meet its work health and safety obligations and maintain a safe working environment.
Based in regional NSW and servicing Dubbo, Wagga Wagga and surrounding areas, we test and tag for offices, workshops, factories and commercial premises — and for construction, mining, civil and renewables sites, where more frequent testing is required. Every item is inspected, tested, tagged and documented, so you have clear evidence that your equipment is safe and your records are audit-ready.
What We Inspect
Our Portable Appliance Testing Services Include
- Portable appliances — single phase
- Portable appliances — three phase
- Portable Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
- Fixed Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
- Microwave radiation leakage testing (a separate test to a separate standard — see below)
What Our Inspection Involves
Test and tag is more than sticking a label on a lead. For every item, our technicians work through the process set out in AS/NZS 3760:
- Visual inspection — we check cords, plugs, casings and connections for damage, wear, overheating or defects. Anything unsafe is removed from service before it's tested.
- Electrical testing — using a calibrated portable appliance tester (PAT), we run the tests appropriate to the equipment class and phase: earth continuity (Class I), insulation resistance and leakage current (Class II), and polarity of leads and cord sets — for both single-phase and three-phase equipment.
- RCD testing — for portable and fixed safety switches, we confirm correct operation and trip times against the standard.
- Pass or fail — results are assessed against the limits in AS/NZS 3760. Equipment that passes is tagged; equipment that fails is tagged out of service and removed so it can be repaired or replaced.
- Tagging — each passed item receives a durable tag showing the test date, the technician, and the next test due date.
- Documentation — every result is logged in a register you can retain for audit and to demonstrate your WHS compliance. Records are typically kept for seven years.
Microwave Radiation Leakage Testing
Microwave leakage testing is a separate test to the electrical safety test above, checking that radiation escaping past worn door seals, hinges or a damaged enclosure stays within safe limits. Using a calibrated microwave leakage detector, we measure emissions around the door, viewing window and seals against the limit set in AS/NZS 60335.2.25 — no more than 5 mW/cm² at 50 mm from the surface. Ovens that pass are tagged; those that exceed the limit are tagged out of service. This is best practice for any workplace with a staff-room or commercial-kitchen microwave, and is typically carried out annually (or six-monthly in high-use sites).
Compliance Standards
Our testing is carried out in accordance with:
- AS/NZS 3760:2022 — In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment and RCDs (the method, test criteria and risk-based intervals).
- AS/NZS 3012:2019 — Electrical installations: construction and demolition sites (the additional requirements for construction, demolition and mining sites).
- AS/NZS 60335.2.25 — Safety of microwave ovens (the microwave radiation leakage limit).
Is test and tag a legal requirement? For most workplaces, test and tag is not a standalone law — it's the recognised way to meet your duty under Work Health and Safety legislation to ensure electrical equipment is safe and properly maintained. For construction, demolition and mining sites in NSW, it is effectively mandatory: AS/NZS 3012 is called up by the NSW Work Health and Safety Regulation, and portable electrical equipment on those sites must be inspected and tested to AS/NZS 3760 methods at intervals not exceeding three months, by a competent person. We'll make sure the right schedule and records are in place for your environment — so you're covered whether you're running an office or a live site.
