Entry Requirements

  • Participants must be 18 years and over
  • Participants must have access to a computer, tablet or smartphone with internet to complete the eLearning before the session. For the online option, each participant also needs a device with a camera, a microphone and Microsoft Teams for the live sessions.
  • Participants must complete the eLearning before their session with the instructor. Mental Health First Aid Australia requires this for the 3-year accreditation. Please finish it at least 48 hours before your first session, and ideally no more than two weeks before, so the material is fresh (the official limit is three months).
  • For group bookings, each participant should send a screenshot of their completed eLearning to their manager and to the instructor at least 48 hours before the first session, so the whole group is confirmed in time.
  • Language, literacy and numeracy requirements - students must be able to read and correctly interpret training materials relevant to mental health first aid, and take part in group discussions and practice activities in English. Participants who want the accreditation also complete a short online assessment after the course.
  • The course covers sensitive topics, including suicide, self-harm and traumatic events. If you have concerns about taking part, please contact us or the instructor before you book.
  • Digital skills: students need basic digital skills to enrol and to complete any online learning, including using a computer, tablet or smartphone, a web browser and email.

Enrolment is confirmed only once all entry requirements have been met.

Course Information

Everything else you need to know.

Course Description

Standard Mental Health First Aid is Mental Health First Aid Australia's 12-hour course for adults. It teaches participants how to give initial support to another adult - a co-worker, friend or family member - who may be developing a mental health problem, whose mental health is getting worse, or who is in a mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Participants learn an evidence-based action plan for approaching someone they are concerned about, starting the conversation, listening without judgement, giving support and information, and encouraging the person to seek professional and other help.

The course covers these mental health problems:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

and how to help in these crisis situations:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Traumatic events

Suicide Prevention Australia recognises the course as a safe, high-quality and effective suicide prevention program.

Each participant is sent their own eLearning voucher before the course. The course suits employees, supervisors, managers, health and safety representatives and HR staff in workplaces of any size.

Accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider does not qualify a participant to diagnose a mental health problem or to provide counselling or treatment.

Learning Outcomes

On completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults
  • Use an evidence-based action plan to start a mental health first aid conversation
  • Understand the barriers to seeking help and how to overcome them
  • Assess a range of crisis situations and give initial support
  • Explain how common mental illnesses are, their risk factors, and the treatments and supports available
  • Look after their own wellbeing as a Mental Health First Aider

Assessment

This course is a non-accredited course.

To be eligible for accreditation, participants must complete the eLearning before their session with the instructor.

Within 5 working days of the last session with the instructor, Mental Health First Aid Australia emails each participant a link to a short online assessment.

The assessment has 10 multiple-choice questions and 5 true/false questions, and participants need to score over 80% to pass. Each participant has three attempts. Anyone who does not pass in three attempts needs to attend the full course again to be accredited.

Participants who pass receive a certificate of accreditation by email and are accredited as Mental Health First Aiders for 3 years. This is Mental Health First Aid Australia's own accreditation; it is not a nationally recognised qualification.

Participants who do not pass, or who choose not to attempt the assessment, can still download a certificate of completion.
