  • Description

A Verification of Competency (VOC) is an independent assessment used to confirm that a person remains competent and currently compliant to operate specific equipment, plant, or perform a particular task.

A VOC assists a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) to meet their Work Health and Safety (WHS) obligations by helping ensure workers and operators continue to have the required skills, knowledge, and ability to work safely.

VOCs are commonly used across many industries for purposes such as pre-employment checks, contractual requirements, site access requirements, or client-specific compliance. Where a company you work for, or a worksite you are attending, requests a current VOC for a specific item of plant, equipment, or task, you will generally need to meet that requirement before undertaking the work.

A VOC is conducted for individuals who already hold a relevant current ticket, licence, qualification, or unit of competency. The purpose is to verify that the person can still perform to the required standard. Anyone undertaking a VOC must provide evidence of their existing competency before the verification process can be completed.

The outcome of a VOC is generally a statement or record that identifies the activity, task, plant, or equipment that has been verified. A VOC is not a nationally accredited unit of competency and does not meet the requirements for the issue of a nationally recognised qualification or statement of attainment.
